Paramus, NJ — Many patients have a difficult time choosing between BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers to satisfy their facial enhancement needs. Dr. Luis Zapiach, a plastic surgeon in New Jersey, says both options are minimally-invasive and can be very effective for facial rejuvenation; however, he adds that one can often be better than the other depending upon a patient’s specific desires. Apart from the actual procedures, he says recovery times and results can vary, so patients should strive to gain a comprehensive understanding of every procedural detail to ensure they will be satisfied with their results.
Patients generally choose to receive BOTOX® Cosmetic due to its effective results and minimal recovery time, says Dr. Zapiach. The injections relax facial muscles that contract to form lines and wrinkles, ultimately smoothing the surface of one’s skin. Most patients experience temporary redness and swelling, but are often able to return to their daily routines within a few hours of the procedure. Dr. Zapiach adds that BOTOX® Cosmetic results typically surface after about forty-eight hours and can be especially effective on areas surrounding the eyes and between the eyebrows. He also mentions that results normally last three to four months, so patients need to continuously receive injections to optimize results.
On the contrary, Dr. Zapiach says many dermal fillers tend to have longer-lasting results. With Juvéderm® and Restylane®, naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid is injected into designated areas to fill facial lines and deep wrinkles, resulting in a smooth and rejuvenated look. Other fillers such as Radiesse® and fat injections enhance patients’ facial aesthetics by increasing collagen production and re-distributing fat, respectively. Dr. Zapiach says dermal filler results often appear right away and can last for years depending on the particular procedure. He adds that bruising and swelling can be expected for all dermal filling techniques; however, most patients can immediately return to their daily activities.
When deciding which facial rejuvenation technique to receive, Dr. Zapiach says patients should always consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure safe and effective treatment. As a board-certified surgeon, he says his New Jersey plastic surgery practice offers a one-on-one consultation to help patients determine which procedure best fits their individual needs so they can feel confident and satisfied with their new look.
